New Canadian Nyaradzo Mutsauri achieved #1 on the Amazon.com category Hot New Releases bestseller list for her book, The Blaze That Destroyed My Shadow.

Author Nyaradzo Mutsauri’s book, The Blaze That Destroyed My Shadow hit the coveted No. 1 position on the Amazon.com Hot New Releases bestsellers List after being published in June. This book also ranked No. 4 and No. 6 in the Amazon.com categories of Action & Adventure Short Shories in the Literature & Fiction category.

After immigrating to Canada from Africa at age 26 as a political refugee, Mutsauri began writing to inspire people who are in tough situations. She realized that it’s not always the money that helps, but words can create a powerful impact in people’s lives, prompting her to dedicate this book to benefit the victims of Alberta’s out of control forest fires that impacted Fort McMurray this spring.

In her book, Mutsauri tells the story of a young man named Shelton who has been laid off of work several times. In search of greener pastures, he searches for work in the same area as his friends have, in Alberta. Little does Shelton know that his life is about to change drastically, as a wild forest fire attacks the area, causing many people to be left homeless.

According to Mutsauri “People should buy this book because it directly helps out those involved in the Fort McMurray fire. I hope the book helps bring awareness to the issue and shows people that they should donate. I am also running a campaign whereby if you buy a paperback copy of the book, $1 of the profit earned goes to helping rebuild Fort McMurray. It is our duty to as humans to help out those in need, as if we were in their shoes, we would want the support from other communities to help us keep moving forward.”

Anne Marie Vela, a reader in Alberta reviewed Mutsauri’s book with this note “Hi, I just finished reading your books. You are indeed talented. I like how you are able to articulate the life of someone you are so different from and yet you bring it out so well. I’m inspired and encouraged.”

Mutsauri states,”Shelton’s illusion prior to the fire was his view on materialistic things, but after the fire, he gained faith in humanity’s ability to help out those in need”.

She dedicated this novel to those involved in the fire due to the fact that the main character went through the same events that those in Fort McMurray went through. As a result, she felt as though it would bring a great amount of attention to the situation and allows people to know that as humans, it is our duty to help out those in need.

The displacement of whole communities due to the fires in and around Fort McMurray dominated news headlines and captivated the attention of people around the world, prompting donations and fundraising activities internationally and at home in Canada.

Red Cross Canada is the primary organization coordinating the distribution of collected funds to those displaced and many celebrities and influencers from around the world have donated a portion of their profits to help victims of this fire.

The support and fundraising relief efforts provided by other professional athletes, comedians, and book authors inspired Mutsauri to donate a portion of the profits from special events and book royalties to the rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Some of the most recognizable celebrity supporters are Shaquille O’Neal, Rob Schneider, Mark Wahlberg, and many Canadians including Nickelback, Bif Naked, Tegan and Sara, and Brett Kissel. Notes of encouragement were sent publicly from Pope Francis, to the displaced residents of Ft. McMurray, through Twitter.
