Georgetown law professor Chris Brummer has started a new blog, “scholarly pursuits” to canvas developments in international finance and trade. In the blog, Brummer will share developments in the Academy concerning the global financial system, fintech, minilateralism, soft law and economic diplomacy.
“At this point,” Brummer noted, “there are relatively few sites to inform students and other researchers of relevant papers, conferences and fellowships and scholarships. Hopefully by creating a nodal point for scholarship, it will help the international community of scholars.”
Brummer noted that although he will highlight developments at Georgetown when relevant, he wants the site to cover work being done at universities elsewhere in the United States and internationally. Furthermore, from time to time, the blog may cover government and private sector studies. The site will initially be housed on his personal research website chrisbrummer.org.
Chris Brummer is Agnes N. Williams Research Professor and Faculty Director of Georgetown’s Institute of International Economic Law. Founded by the late John Jackson, the IIEL is one of the world’s leading centers for the study of international trade, and operates as a hub of professional, regulatory and scholarly activity at the Georgetown University Law Center. It also offers executive education programming for attorneys the world over.
Prior to joining Georgetown’s faculty with tenure in 2009, Brummer was an assistant professor of law at Vanderbilt Law School. He has also taught at several leading universities as a visiting professor including the universities of Basel, Heidelberg, and the London School of Economics.
Professor Brummer has worked for a number of think tanks on issues as diverse as renminbi internationalization, EU-US coordination of financial rules, and capital access and financial technology.
After serving as a member of FINRA’s National Adjudicatory Council, Professor Brummer was nominated twice by President Obama in 2016 and 2017 to serve as a Commissioner on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He received unanimous, bipartisan approval in the vote by the Senate Agriculture Committee, though no floor vote was immediately scheduled after the election. The nomination was subsequently withdrawn by President Trump.
Professor Brummer lectures widely on finance and global governance, as well as on public and private international law, market microstructure and international trade. Mr. Brummer is the author of several books, most recently Minilateralism: How Trade Alliances, Soft Law and Financial Engineering are Redefining Economic Statecraft (2014).
Chris Brummer earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he graduated with honors, and he holds a Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Chicago. Before becoming a professor, he practiced law in the New York and London offices of Cravath, Swaine &Moore LLP.
