Cyber Security and Online Privacy Advocate, Carey Parker, Interviewed on Influencers Radio

Published on May 10, 2016

Carey Parker, Cyber Security and online privacy advocate, was recently interviewed on Influencers Radio, sharing his mission to help everyday, non-technical people understand how to proactively protect their online privacy and computers.

Trying to understanding how to protect personal computers from hackers, viruses, and other evils is confusing and baffling to most non-technical people. Financial risk, vulnerability, lost time, and stress are just a few of the results of not understanding the basics and putting simple privacy protection processes in place.

Carey Parker, a highly experienced telecommunications software development professional, is on a mission to change this situation. Serving as the “family IT guy” for years and having shared this key message with friends, colleagues, and students at the Duke Continuing Studies Program and other venues, Parker has experienced first-hand the confusion around the basic nuts and bolts of how the computer works and misunderstandings about the ways to prevent hacking, scams, and identify theft.

“You don’t need a degree in engineering. There are plenty of simple, common-sense things you can do to protect yourself from opportunistic hackers and mass surveillance. But I feel it’s also important to understand at a basic level how this stuff works so you can be an informed consumer as well as an informed voter,” Parker advises.

On this Influencers Radio interview, Parker shares the need to understand online privacy, the steps needed to protect ourselves from hackers, scams, and identify theft without breaking the bank, and some simple steps to get started. To hear the entire interview, listen here.

Parker recently released the second edition of his best-selling book, Firewalls Don’t Stop Dragons: A Step-By-Step Guide to Computer Security for Non-Techies.
