As a business owner, uniqueness defines the value of a business. Whether it’s an amazing new product or service, unique content or method, or a unique brand, uniqueness reflects the business’s personality, objectives, and mission. When a business owner gets an idea for a new product or process, one of the first things they’ll need to do is determine if it’s patentable. This can be a complex process, as many factors must be considered. Here are a few tips to help make the determination.

First, and foremost, it is important to keep ideas private. If someone shares an idea with too many people, it could get out before they’re ready to patent it. In order to avoid this, they should only share an idea with a select few people they trust.

Secondly, always use non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) when working with others, whether they’re potential investors, manufacturers, or even just consultants. This will help to protect an idea in the event that it is leaked.

The Bionic Porcupines III journey began seven months ago at their first practice in the home of one of their coaches, Mr. Mark Snaufer. 

The team brainstormed their core values presentation, project ideas, robot design and many other aspects of the upcoming robotics season.  The team gathered an average of three days per week to work on various aspects of the competition in order to prepare for local and state competitions. The team estimates that they spent at least 1500 person hours of building, designing, programing, community meetings, and practicing of robot runs and presentations to get them ready for their destiny. 

At the state tournament, the competition between the 48 teams was fierce and friendly, but in the end the Bionic Porcupines III were selected as the top team with two coveted trophies.  The Porcupines had the highest score during the robot games with a 395 points in a single run (out of 540 points) and they took home the honor of state champions with the best overall performance across all categories.

“While I am so impressed that the Bionic Porcupines team won the Champions award and head to world to represent Utah, I am more proud that they found joy with their competition and with each other,” says coach Ben Holt.

Robotics champions are selected not only because of their robot’s ability to run the highly sophisticated and autonomous “missions” but also on the team’s ability to create a project that gives back to their community and representing the highest standards of professionalism, cooperation and competitive spirit.  This year the Porcupines were recognized for all of these judging items, including their community impact.   The team created an iPhone application that was adopted by the city of Sandy as part of the city’s water conservation project.  The Porcupines’ app, called “Water Bank,“ allows Sandy city residents to monitor and adjust their water usage in an attempt to reduce the wasting of water.  The Porcupines used gamification, as taught to them by Chris Wasden at the University of Utah, in their app to make it not only educational but fun to use.   Water Bank is patent pending. 

The Porcupines now move on to compete against an even tougher class of competition at the Lego Robotics World Championships. The world championships will take place on April 18^th through 21st in Houston, Texas.

John Rankins spoke at the Entrepreneurship Student Club at Harvard Business School’s Business Expert Forum recently and shared the stage with Best-Selling Author Suzanne Somers, who recently released “Tox-Sick to Not Sick. “It was an honor to meet Suzanne Somers and to speak at Entrepreneurship Student Club at Harvard Business School’s Business Expert Forum,” Rankins said. It’s having a great attitude and start over. That’s what I was able to do. That’s why I know that life is beautiful.”

 Rankins is also helping make life beautiful through his 1,000 smiles campaign. It started seven years ago when he met a young girl with a cleft palate and a cleft lip. Her mouth and face were disfigured.

“When I saw her begging on the street, it brought me to tears. It made me appreciate how much that I have in my life and how grateful I am,” he said.

In his interview, Stoddard described programs that EOS has developed to keep over 20 million pounds of materials out of overcrowded landfills every year, and how EOS is also helping to protect the environment by reduction of carbon emissions and demand for energy required to create new products.

Although the products that EOS collects and recycles are individually small in size, they represent a significant impact on new materials required for new product manufacturing and to removal of waste from landfills across the United States.

As an example, for every 100,000 toner cartridges that EOS recycles, over 150,000 pounds of plastic, over 50,000 gallons of oil and over 20,000 pounds of aluminum are saved. EOS is averaging over 290,000 cubic feet per month of materials that are being kept out of landfills. In 1994, a start-up company named Netscape changed the course of history. The Netscape browser was the first internet browser to be made widely available to the public. Netscape enjoyed the largest IPO in U.S. history to that date.

“The Netscape browser changed everything because there was a “perfect storm” of technologies at that time”, says marketing expert John Zehr. “Computers had become commonplace, everyone had a telephone line, and modems were widely available. All people needed was the software to surf the web. When that happened, the Internet as we now know it was born.”

According to Zehr, the “Next Big Thing” in digital technology is called “beacons”.

“Beacons are business card-sized, battery-powered devices that broadcast a sales or informational message in a very small radius. They allow a business or organization to connect with their audience through their smartphone”, says Zehr. “Like the Netscape browser, a perfect storm is brewing for beacon technology. They’re inexpensive, everyone wants to save money, and most of us own a smartphone.”

According to www.economist.com, about half the adult population owns a smartphone; by 2020, 80% will. Smartphones have also penetrated every aspect of daily life. The average American is buried in one for over two hours every day. Indeed, nearly 80% of smartphone-owners check messages, news or other services within 15 minutes of getting up. About 10% admit to having used the gadget during sex.

“Beacons bridge the gap between the big, impersonal Internet and the individual. They allow a business to create a more personal relationship with their customer or client”, says Zehr.

Here’s an example of what a beacon can do for a small business: as a diner enters Joe’s Eatery, he gets a message on his smartphone. The message welcomes him and thanks him for choosing Joe’s. He clicks a link to read about the daily specials and is redirected to a web page with a brief video of Joe describing his specials, how fresh the ingredients are, and how they’re prepared.

As he finishes his meal, the diner gets another message that invites him to join Joe’s Frequent Diner’s Club. He clicks the button and the next time he visits Joe’s, he’s greeted by name (Joe gets a message on his smartphone that the guest is there again, along with the guest’s photo!) and Joe asks if he’d like the veal picatta again (Joe recorded his previous meal choice in his beacon app), or if he’d rather have for some fresh salmon. He enjoys the fish and as he pays, the cashier taps his phone to record the visit. The customer is pleased because the next time he eats at Joe’s he’ll get a free dessert. Joe is happy because he’s assured the diner will return.

Retailers and merchants are proving to be the fastest to adopt beacon marketing practices. “Harvard Business Review published an article in 2014 that said that acquiring a new customer is anywhere from five to 25 times more expensive than retaining an existing one. They cited research that shows increasing customer retention rates by 5% increases profits by 25% to 95%.”

“Beacons will be everywhere in just a few years”, says Zehr. “Museums will use beacons to share details about each exhibit. Schools will use beacons to guide you to your classroom and notify you if bad weather has forced a closure. Merchants will use beacons to create more loyalty and affinity with their customers. It’s the ultimate customer service and retention technology.”

“Small business owners are very excited about beacons because they can make more money without spending an arm and a leg to find new customers”, says Zehr. “When they provide better, more personalized service, their customers want to do more business with them.
