NEW ORLEANS, LA – Sept. 18, 2026 – Todd Villarrubia, founding partner of Wealth Planning Law Group, joined host Justin on The Donut Shop Podcast for a conversation aimed at an audience not typically associated with estate planning: police officers, firefighters, and other first responders building a pension, a home, and a legacy over the course of a career in public service.
Villarrubia drew on his own family’s experience, including his father’s disabling stroke when Villarrubia was 16, to explain why every family, not just the wealthy, needs basic protections in place. “Your will and your revocable trust do not govern any nonprobate assets, which include pensions, 401(k)s, life insurance, and annuities,” he told listeners, urging them to check that their beneficiary designations are current, especially after a divorce or remarriage.
The conversation covered practical ground for a first responder audience: setting up an LLC for side businesses, why a will alone is not enough, the role of a revocable trust in avoiding probate, and long-term care planning given that roughly 80 percent of people will need some form of extended care.
“There’s no one-size-fits-all for everybody,” Villarrubia said, cautioning listeners against relying on generic legal advice they find online or on social media. “That’s why you go to a professional and figure out what exactly you need based on your unique objectives.”
