Dr. Hufnagel of Stahl Eyecare Experts Introduces Breakthrough Procedure for Treatment of Irregular Astigmatism

Published on November 16, 2016

The Stahl Eyecare Experts team is always searching for new ways to helps patients enjoy better vision, and ultimately, a better life. Earlier this year, the FDA approved corneal cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus, a condition in which the clear tissue on the cornea bulges outward causing irregular astigmatism. The Stahl Eyecare team was ready!

Dr. Thierry Hufnagel, refractive surgeon and partner physician at Stahl Eyecare Experts, was the first to perform corneal cross-linking in the practice. He is excited about the potential that exists for treating and managing the disease to help patients enjoy improved vision and avoid a corneal transplant.

Corneal cross-linking is now available at Stahl Eyecare Experts for the treatment of irregular astigmatism. “This exciting new procedure works to strengthen and stabilize the cornea, halting further corneal changes and possibly improving uncorrected vision,” said Dr. Hufnagel.

During the cross-linking procedure, the patient is awake but mildly sedated, and the eye is numbed. Riboflavin drops are applied to the eye’s surface (the cornea). An ultraviolet light is focused onto the cornea, which works with the riboflavin on a microscopic level to strengthen the cornea.

Ultimately this means the cornea’s shape can be strengthened and stabilized, allowing for better vision! “It’s a very easy procedure for patients, they don’t feel anything and they do really well with the prevention of the progression of keratoconus,” said Dr. Hufnagel.
