Detroit Firefighters & Friends Host Their 21st Annual Back-2-School Bash.

The firefighters of Engine 40 Foundation & friends will host their 21st Annual Back-2-School community event and backpack giveaway on Saturday, August 25, 2018, from 11 am until 5 pm at the corner of 13939 Dexter in Detroit, MI 48238.

Program Director Christopher Sumrall states, that one of Engine 40 Foundation goals is to connect the community to needed resources that may otherwise seem out of reach and as we all know much local and national attention has been on the breakdown in the relationship between law officers and certain communities. Our experience has shown us that we are the unique position (we are primarily composed of active and retired firefighters) to bridge that divide and possibly foster a healthy respect both for civilians as well as law officers. We also plan to continue to be a resource for certain populations in need (children, seniors, mentally ill, physically challenged, and families living near or below the poverty line).

Over our 20+ years of community service, one of our primary goals has been to re-establish trust in between the community and the first responders who serve it. This event has supported thousands of inner-city kids desire to start their school year off right and has supplied them with the tools they so desperately need. Many local area families cannot afford such as pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, crayons, and backpacks! In addition to the supplies, there are a host of activities for the entire family all day, from horseback riding, rock-climbing wall, face paintings, inflatable bounce houses, free food & drinks, clowns, & and even access to medical and dental check-ups on-site and free of charge. The Firefighters of Engine 40 Foundation recognize they have an obligation that extends farther than city limits and furthers the oath taken to protect Detroit and its residents. They have an obligation to be examples of character, teamwork, and community.

The hope is to ignite a figurative fire of community involvement that will continue to fan the flames of education. A goal to provide 1500+ school-age children with backpacks filled with school supplies has been set. Your help with advancing the message is greatly appreciated.
