FOLSOM, Calif., August 3, 2026 — Star Bound, a learning-first digital world created to make children’s screen time more educational, creative and intentional, today announced the launch of its School Pioneer Program for the 2026–2027 academic year.
The program will invite a limited group of charter schools, elementary schools and middle schools to receive early access to Star Bound and help influence the platform’s continued development.
Participating schools will have opportunities to provide feedback on educational content, student engagement, digital safety, classroom applications and age-appropriate platform features.
Star Bound was created by entrepreneur and father Matthew Loughran alongside his children, Walter and Ruby. The idea grew from a question many parents and educators face: How can children enjoy digital experiences without sacrificing learning, safety or creativity?
“Children are not going to stop using technology, and schools are not going to stop incorporating it into education,” said Loughran, founder of Star Bound. “The opportunity is to create better digital environments—places where children can explore, create, learn and have fun without many of the risks associated with traditional gaming and social platforms.”
Star Bound is being developed as an interactive digital world that combines game-like exploration with educational challenges, creativity and guided learning support.
The platform is intended to help students engage with academic concepts in a way that feels rewarding and immersive. Planned features include interactive worlds, learning-based missions, digital rewards and AI-supported tutoring designed to guide students through questions rather than simply supplying answers.
Charter Schools Invited to Help Shape the Platform
Charter schools have long served as testing grounds for innovative teaching models, specialized curricula and student-centered approaches to learning.
The Star Bound School Pioneer Program is designed to bring educators into the product development process before the platform’s structure and educational applications are finalized.
Rather than asking schools to adapt to a completed product, Star Bound will work with Pioneer Schools to better understand how the platform can support real educational environments.

“Teachers and school leaders understand students in ways that technology companies cannot replicate on their own,” Loughran said. “We want educators to tell us what works, what does not and what would make Star Bound genuinely useful inside and outside the classroom.”
Participating educators may provide feedback on curriculum alignment, accessibility, student motivation, age appropriateness and teacher oversight.
Students may also have opportunities to share which challenges, stories, environments and rewards feel most engaging, while parents can offer feedback about safety, transparency and at-home use.
Building a Better Alternative to Passive Screen Time
Star Bound’s development comes as parents and schools continue to examine the role technology plays in children’s daily lives.
Screen time can include dramatically different experiences, from passive entertainment and social media use to digital reading, creative design, educational games and collaborative problem-solving.
Star Bound is based on the belief that the quality and purpose of a child’s digital activity matter as much as the total number of minutes spent using a device.
The platform is intended to encourage active participation rather than passive consumption. Children will be challenged to explore, make decisions, solve problems and use creativity as they move through the Star Bound universe.
The company is also developing the platform with child safety, privacy and adult oversight as central design considerations.
Star Bound does not aim to replace teachers, books, outdoor activity, sports or face-to-face interaction. Instead, the company is focused on improving a portion of the screen time children are already experiencing.
“Parents should not have to choose between a platform their children enjoy and one they can feel good about,” Loughran said. “Our goal is to build an experience that earns the trust of families and educators while still being exciting enough that children actually want to use it.”

Created With Children, Not Just for Them
Star Bound’s approach has been shaped by the involvement of Loughran’s children from the project’s earliest stages.
Walter and Ruby contributed ideas related to the platform’s name, characters, worlds, activities and overall experience. Their participation helped ensure the project was not designed solely from an adult perspective.
“Children know immediately whether something feels fun, forced or boring,” Loughran said. “Building Star Bound with my children has helped us balance what young users want with what parents and educators need.”
The School Pioneer Program expands that collaborative model by giving more students a voice in the platform’s development.
Star Bound plans to use feedback from the program to improve its learning experiences, safety features, educator resources and family tools before a broader rollout.

Charter school administrators, principals, teachers, board members and parent leaders are encouraged to apply or refer a school for consideration.
