Chris Stoddard, co-founder and CEO of Environmental Office Solutions was interviewed about current trends in recycling by Business Innovators Magazine.

East Hartford, CT – Chris Stoddard, CEO of Environmental Office Solutions (EOS), was recently featured in Business Innovators Magazine. In his interview, Stoddard described programs that EOS has developed to keep over 20 million pounds of materials out of overcrowded landfills every year, and how EOS is also helping to protect the environment by reduction of carbon emissions and demand for energy required to create new products.

EOS collects empty printer cartridges (toner cartridges used in laser printers and inkjet cartridges), cell phones and printer fusers from businesses, government agencies, charitable organizations and other non-profits across the United States for use in remanufactured products. Although the products that EOS collects and recycles are individually small in size, they represent a significant impact on new materials required for new product manufacturing and to removal of waste from landfills across the United States.

As an example, for every 100,000 toner cartridges that EOS recycles, over 150,000 pounds of plastic, over 50,000 gallons of oil and over 20,000 pounds of aluminum are saved. EOS is averaging over 290,000 cubic feet per month of materials that are being kept out of landfills. EOS offers a closed-loop chain of custody commitment to commercial, industrial, municipal and consumer markets, supported by their R2 (Responsible Recycling) practices.

Stoddard said, “Not only are we helping them make a significant impact on the environment, we are paying businesses, government agencies, charities and non-profits to recycle their waste. We have recycling programs for businesses, whether small offices for doctors and lawyers or very large businesses, like the insurance companies we have here in Hartford. We also work with municipalities, state agencies, and other government organizations to establish closed-loop recycling programs.”

EOS has created recycling programs designed for schools, churches, charities and other non-profit organizations. As an example, printer cartridge collection units and posters are placed in schools. Children at the schools go home and tell their parents about the recycling program. When the parents replace their used printer cartridges, they have their children bring in the used cartridges, instead of throwing the cartridges into the trash. When the box at the school is filled, it comes back to EOS where it is itemized and the school is paid based on the value of the product sent.

Printer cartridges and other products that EOS collects are sold to remanufacturing companies that reuse the recycled products and turn them into fully functional products that are sold to businesses and consumers. The end result are products that have a lower cost, less requirements for raw materials and energy, and reduction of waste in landfills.

Environmental Office Solutions (EOS) was founded in 1996 by Chris Stoddard, CEO, and Mark Tosi, Executive Vice President. EOS, on an annual basis, diverts over 20 million pounds of materials away from landfills and puts them to reuse in remanufactured products. The company operates facilities for collection, processing and warehousing in East Hartford, Connecticut and in the Los Angeles, California area. EOS holds certifications for R2:2013, Responsible Recycling Practices for Electronics Recycling; ISO 14001, Environmental Management System; and OHSAS 18001, International Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
