The Addictions Coach and founder of The Addictions Academy, Dr. Cali Estes, confirmed they have officially now launched over forty courses with twenty different faculty members, to train Sober and Recovery Coaches enhanced methods to help families struggling with their loved one’s addictions challenges. She recently went on record to say that our current system of addiction and substance-abuse treatment does not always work and that professional coaches are needed more than ever.
Explaining the need for an increase in professional Recovery Coaches and Interventionists, Estes noted, “Let’s face it. Times are tough for an addict or parent of an addict who believes treatment alone is going to help. Everyone, from athletes to executives, can benefit from a professionally trained and certified coach. And those struggling in recovery, including their families, are no different.”
President Donald Trump recently declared the opioid epidemic a national public health emergency, telling an audience in the East Room of the White House that “we can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic.”
“This epidemic is a national health emergency,” he said. “Nobody has seen anything like what is going on now.” He added, “As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue. It is time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction. Never been this way. We can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic. We can do it.”
Trump, in a wide-ranging speech about opioids, stressed the need for further enforcement and linked his planned wall along the US-Mexico border with efforts to stem the tide of illegal drugs coming into the United States.
“An astonishing 90% of the heroin in America comes from south of the border, where we will be building a wall, which will greatly help in this problem,” he said.
Some experts are skeptical about the wall’s ability to fight the problem, given its roots in painkillers prescribed by doctors in the United States.
“We need to start to think differently about where to find successful recovery alternatives. Building a wall, combined with the a new version of the failed “Just Say No” model is not going to work,” Estes declared. Her goal: to get as many professionally trained recovery coaches out there as possible.
Russell Brand, actor and author of the recent book, “Recovery: Freedom from Our Addictions” has voiced, “The mentality and behavior of drug addicts and alcoholics are wholly irrational until you understand that they are completely powerless over their addiction and unless they have structured help, they have no hope.”
Structured, professional help from trained and certified coaches can often be the difference between life and death for someone new to recovery. A recovery coach is a person that works with and supports individuals immersed in an addiction, and coaches people in recovery from the abuse of alcohol and drugs, gambling, eating disorders or other addictive behaviors.
Recovery coaches who work with people with addictions have been at times referred to as a peer recovery support specialist, a recovery support specialist, or a sober companion. However, there is no requirement that a recovery coach be a peer, meaning they are an addict in recovery. Although it may be believed having experiential knowledge is a best practice for a recovery coach, it could be a recovery coach has knowledge of addiction and recovery perhaps by knowing an addict, having a family member with an addiction or taking courses such as those offered by The Addictions Academy.
When asked why coaching could be a game-changer for someone in recovery, Dr. Estes asserted, “Private recovery coaching for an addiction is extremely different from your typical drug rehab or therapy sessions. Coaching focuses on forward, positive motion and does not dwell on past issues and traumas, whereas therapy and counseling go back into your past to confront past issues that have not been handled.”
The Addictions Academy has been offering a wide-ranging assortment of advanced training for years in an on-going effort to counteract the growing addiction problem. The Academy has program graduates in 22 countries helping address the addiction problem worldwide.
“Recovery coaching professionals, good ones, are able to delve into the current and existing issues that are holding someone back in life and help them move forward, addiction free. This is about creating the perfect and customized blend of guidance, information, accountability, and oversight,” Estes concluded.
