New Checklist for the Wives of Porn Addicts Addresses Next Steps

Published on May 4, 2018

Women have many questions when they find out their partner is using porn. This checklist is a step-by-step guide that women can use to know exactly what to do when they discover their husband is using porn.

Women hardly know what to do when they find out their emotionally abusive partner is using porn.  Betrayal Trauma Recovery, a non-profit organization that serves women suffering from abuse and betrayal, has developed a checklist for wives of porn users. The checklist is a step-by-step guide that women can use to know exactly what to do when they discover their husband is using porn.

The checklist includes nine steps to heal from Betrayal Trauma. The checklist includes tips like deciding who is right type of person to confide in, developing a self-care plan, avoiding couples therapy, learning boundaries, and so on. The tips in the list give specifics to truly finding peace and safety where options from other professionals fall short when it comes to helping women heal from Betrayal Trauma.

“I didn’t understand that I was being emotionally abused. The checklist helped me see that my husband’s lies, manipulation, gaslighting were abusive,” said Virginia, a BTR client. “With the help of the checklist I was able to start a journey of establishing safety in my life. It helped me understand what I was going through, rather than feeling blamed for my husband’s choices.”

Betrayal Trauma Recovery (BTR) puts the physical and emotional safety of the women first. They focus on holistic emotional safety, and empowering women to set and maintain the boundaries that are crucial to establishing an emotionally safe home.

“Too often, women in this situation are blamed by their husband and family members. Sometimes therapists and clergy fail to protect wives from the emotional abuse. Instead people around them downplay the seriousness of the situation,” said Anne Blythe, Founder of BTR.

BTR stresses that setting healthy boundaries to establish safety is the only way to restore peace in the home. “We don’t advocate for divorce or marriage,” said Coach Gaelyn, Coaching Coordinator at BTR. “Our checklist is designed to anticipate and address the main areas where women in abusive relationships are hitting roadblocks, to help them get to safety, safely.”

BTR professionals are trained by the Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists, using the Multi-Dimensional Partner Trauma Model (MPT-M™) which urges women to secure emotional safety and stability before attempting to process what is happening. The coaches advise women begin the healing process, before they explore emotional reconnection to a man who is or may continue to hurt her emotionally.

Betrayal Trauma Recovery is a nonprofit organization offering support when women need immediate emotional refuge from the pain, chaos, and isolation associated with their husband’s abuse: lying, porn use, infidelity, manipulation, gaslighting, and narcissistic behaviors. BTR offers women a free podcast and educational website, a free peer-to-peer Facebook group, daily group sessions, and one-on-one sessions with certified, professional Betrayal Trauma Recovery specialists.
