Sutton’s, of Springfield, Illinois, has received the most prestigious contractor award GAF offers: The GAF President’s Club Award. This highly coveted award recognizes Sutton’s as one of the “elite of the elite” residential roofing contractors in the United States.
GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, and only GAF Master Elite(R) Contractors can compete for its residential President’s Club Award. To qualify for this award, a residential roofing contractor must meet specific criteria in at least one out of three different pathways:
Performance pathway – where contractors focus on giving their property owners the best possible service, quality, and protection
Reliability pathway – where the contractor has a long history of offering their customers the best quality and protection
Service pathway – where contractors consistently offer their customers the best protection available in the marketplace.
Sutton’s has been a GAF Master Elite(R) Contractor since 2004. To become a Master Elite(R) Contractor–a status that less than 2% of roofing contractors nationwide are able to achieve–a candidate must demonstrate proper licensing, maintain insurance (in states that require it), have a proven reputation, and show commitment to ongoing professional training.

According to Max Bumgardner, marketing director at Sutton’s, the company’s status as a GAF Master Elite(R) Contractor is a valuable selling point. “We are currently the only Master Elite contractor in Springfield, and that’s been true since we began to earn the award.”
Quality of work is also a factor in success at Sutton’s. “Quality comes from time and training,” says Bumgardner. “We’ve been in business 72 years; we’re pretty proud of that. People can rely on the fact that we’re properly training our people; customers don’t have to worry about subcontractors who might try to cancel insurance or cut corners or anything like that.”
Sutton’s has a commitment to the environment. “Our roofing division has tried to work with some of the waste companies in town to see what we can do about getting shingles recycled,” explains Bumgardner. “We are a GAF-certified green roofer. There is currently no place in Springfield to take tough-to-recycle shingles that I am aware of. The closest place is about an hour’s drive from here, which makes the cost unreasonably high for consumers who choose that option. If we can get a company to bring that recycling opportunity into Springfield, I think it will help the whole community.”
Giving back to the community is also important to Sutton’s. The company donates cabinets and accessories from home remodeling projects to Habitat for Humanity.
The company has added new systems to its offerings. By utilizing different applications and software, Sutton’s enables its clients to better customize their projects and to see what the finished versions will look like.
